Every VPN slows your connection a little. It encrypts what you send and passes your data through a server that may be in another country, and that adds a short delay. On a fast VPN, you won’t notice it. On a slow one, a 4K film drops to a lower resolution, online games lag, and a big download takes much longer than usual.
Most VPN companies call themselves fast, and a sales page can’t prove it. A fair comparison requires testing every VPN on the same connection, on servers nearby and far away. We did exactly that, and the results didn’t always match the marketing: one feature sold as a speed upgrade added almost nothing on a normal home connection. Here are the five fastest VPNs of 2026, starting with the quick ranking.
Fastest VPN Services in 2026
- NordVPN: Best for overall speed, with the fastest US servers and low ping to Japan
- Surfshark: Best value for streaming, with the top UK speed in our tests
- Proton VPN: Best for privacy, with the smallest upload loss in our tests
- ExpressVPN: Best for quick connections, the fastest we timed
- Private Internet Access: Best low-cost fast VPN, with no limit on devices
VPN Speed Comparison 2026: Average Speed Loss
Lower is better: these are each VPN’s average speed losses across our UK, US, and Japanese servers. NordVPN came out on top for download speed, ahead of Surfshark. Upload speeds stayed within about 1 Mbps of each other on our connection, so the ranking leans on download speed and ping, the delay you notice in games and video calls.
| Average Download Speed Loss | Average Upload Speed Loss | |
| NordVPN | 7.8% | 5.5% |
| Surfshark | 9.6% | 5.9% |
| Proton VPN | 10.2% | 2.7% |
| ExpressVPN | 11.3% | 8.9% |
| PIA VPN | 12.7% | 7.4% |
How We Tested VPN Speeds
We tested every VPN in October 2026 on a Windows 11 PC with a wired 190.36 Mbps connection in Europe. Its upload speed was 19.37 Mbps, and ping was 10 ms. We connected to servers in the UK, the US, and Japan three times a day, in the morning, at midday, and in the evening, for three days. Each test used Speedtest by Ookla, and every speed figure is the average of those runs.
Each VPN used its fastest protocol: NordLynx on NordVPN, Lightway on ExpressVPN, and WireGuard on Surfshark, Proton VPN, and PIA. We tested ping separately, with the five VPNs back to back in one session, so those figures compare like with like. Distance explained most of the results. For every VPN, the UK server, closest to our PC, was the fastest, and the Japanese server was the slowest.
We also tested CyberGhost, Hide.me, IPVanish, and others, and they lost more speed on average. CyberGhost came closest, and our CyberGhost test has its full results.
Fastest VPN: Top 5 High-Speed VPNs in 2026
All five kept most of our speed on nearby servers. The differences show up far from home, in ping, and when you enable extra security features.
1. NordVPN: Fastest VPN Overall in 2026

Pros
- Near-full speed on US servers
- Low ping to Japan
- Fast on OpenVPN too
- Quick Connect finds a fast server
- Widest country coverage
- App-level kill switch
Cons
- Windows app clashes with other VPNs
- NordWhisper slows down under heavy load
Across our three server locations, NordVPN’s speed dropped by only 7.8%, and no VPN did better. That’s too small to see in a 4K stream or a page load. On US servers, it led every VPN we tested, at 181.50 Mbps, so US streaming sites load at almost full speed from Europe. Its ping to Japan, 215 ms, was lower than on any other VPN. Fast-paced games will still feel that delay, but video calls to Asia stay usable.
NordVPN Speed Test Results
| Server Location | Download | Upload | Ping |
| Baseline (no VPN) | 190.36 Mbps | 19.37 Mbps | 10 ms |
| UK | 184.73 Mbps | 18.69 Mbps | 41 ms |
| US | 181.50 Mbps | 18.66 Mbps | 134 ms |
| Japan | 160.47 Mbps | 17.57 Mbps | 215 ms |
Features of NordVPN
NordLynx, NordVPN’s version of WireGuard, was its fastest protocol. Its 41 ms ping on UK servers also makes it a solid VPN for gaming when you connect nearby. Double VPN, which encrypts your connection twice on two separate servers, barely slowed it down, so you can keep it enabled for sensitive browsing on hotel Wi-Fi. NordWhisper, its protocol for getting past VPN blocks, was the exception,
It had much higher ping during big downloads and uploads. Keep it for networks where nothing else connects. Our main complaint concerns the Windows app. When some other VPNs were open in the background, NordVPN’s connection attempts occasionally failed. The fix was an app reset, a wait of a minute or two, and a fresh sign-in, a few minutes lost each time.
Our Favorite Feature: Quick Connect
Quick Connect picks a server for you based on your location and how busy the servers are. Use it to find the fastest NordVPN server without comparing them yourself. If you want a particular country, choose it from the list, and NordVPN selects a server there.
If you also use a VPN for work, quit it before you start NordVPN. Proton VPN and PIA didn’t have this problem in our tests. NordVPN covers 152 countries, and every plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
2. Surfshark: Best-Value Fast VPN for Streaming

Pros
- Camouflage Mode obfuscation
- Unblocks Netflix and BBC iPlayer
- CleanWeb ad blocking
- Custom MultiHop pairs
- Post-quantum encryption
- No device limit
Cons
- Slow to connect
- Much slower on OpenVPN TCP
Surfshark’s UK server came closest to our speed without a VPN in the main tests, with a loss of just 1.8%. Distance cost it more, which is why it averaged a 9.6% speed loss. Still, its US server kept 170.38 Mbps, so large downloads finish quickly. It ranks second because it comes close to NordVPN on speed, unblocked almost every streaming service we tried, and costs less.
Surfshark Speed Test Results
| Server Location | Download | Upload | Ping |
| Baseline (no VPN) | 190.36 Mbps | 19.37 Mbps | 10 ms |
| UK | 186.96 Mbps | 18.93 Mbps | 51 ms |
| US | 170.38 Mbps | 18.23 Mbps | 144 ms |
| Japan | 158.84 Mbps | 17.54 Mbps | 241 ms |
Features of Surfshark
Surfshark is one of the best VPNs for streaming. It unblocked every service in our streaming tests except ITV, including three Netflix libraries. If you watch ITV, choose NordVPN, which unblocked it. CleanWeb removes ads and trackers, which also helps busy news sites load faster. The weak point is connection time.
Our Favorite Feature: Custom MultiHop
MultiHop chains two Surfshark servers, and you choose the pair yourself, for example a UK server followed by a German one. It cost little speed in our tests, but connecting our pair took 10 seconds, so save it for sessions where privacy comes first.
Each connection took 4 to 5 seconds, longer than the rest of our top five. It’s a short wait, but you’ll feel it if you switch servers several times while looking for a working streaming library. Every plan also includes a static IP address, which stays the same each time you connect and helps with logins that flag a new IP address, such as online banking. Surfshark covers 100 countries, and you can test it for 30 days before committing.
3. Proton VPN: Fast VPN Built for Privacy

Pros
- VPN Accelerator adds speed
- Advanced kill switch
- Stealth obfuscation
- Secure Core servers
- Open-source apps
- Swiss privacy laws
Cons
- Secure Core adds noticeable ping
- No Smart DNS
On download speed, Proton VPN trailed Surfshark slightly, with a 10.2% average loss. In daily use, you won’t feel that difference. It did best on upload, with a 2.7% upload speed loss, the smallest in our tests. That helps when you send large files to cloud storage or share your camera on long video calls.
Proton VPN Speed Test Results
| Server Location | Download | Upload | Ping |
| Baseline (no VPN) | 190.36 Mbps | 19.37 Mbps | 10 ms |
| UK | 178.89 Mbps | 19.21 Mbps | 45 ms |
| US | 173.68 Mbps | 19.01 Mbps | 135 ms |
| Japan | 159.99 Mbps | 18.31 Mbps | 218 ms |
Features of Proton VPN
Proton VPN stands out for its privacy tools. Secure Core first sends your connection to a Proton-owned server in a privacy-friendly country, such as Switzerland, before it leaves the network. That extra layer is meant for sensitive work such as journalism, but it adds noticeable ping, so disable it for gaming and video calls. Stealth, Proton’s obfuscation protocol, is built for school, office, and hotel Wi-Fi that detects and blocks VPN traffic, and free accounts can use it too. Our full Proton VPN review covers them in more depth.
Our Favorite Feature: VPN Accelerator
VPN Accelerator is a set of Proton’s own network improvements that speed up connections, especially to distant servers. On our US server, it added 4.9% of speed compared with the same connection with Accelerator disabled. Keep it enabled in the settings.
Proton VPN has no Smart DNS, a DNS setting some VPNs offer to change a TV’s streaming region, so a Samsung or LG TV has to use a VPN set up on your router. Proton VPN also has no post-quantum encryption, protection against far more powerful future computers that NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN already offer.
That’s unexpected for a privacy-first VPN. Proton VPN operates servers in 149 countries, and a free plan lets you try Proton VPN before you subscribe.
4. ExpressVPN: Quickest Connections and Plug-and-Play Apps

Pros
- Near-instant connections
- Native Apple TV app
- Simple, plug-and-play apps
- Post-quantum Lightway protocol
- Netflix, iPlayer, and Prime Video unblocked
Cons
- Lightway Turbo disables split tunneling
- Few settings to fine-tune
ExpressVPN’s average download speed was 11.3% below our normal connection. Its Japanese result, 163.94 Mbps, topped our Japan tests, so it’s a good choice if you often connect far from home. Connections took 1 to 2 seconds, quicker than any VPN we timed. It ranks fourth because it lost more speed than NordVPN, Surfshark, and Proton VPN, though it connected faster than any of them.
ExpressVPN Speed Test Results
| Server Location | Download | Upload | Ping |
| Baseline (no VPN) | 190.36 Mbps | 19.37 Mbps | 10 ms |
| UK | 185.74 Mbps | 18.02 Mbps | 42 ms |
| US | 177.03 Mbps | 17.74 Mbps | 129 ms |
| Japan | 163.94 Mbps | 17.15 Mbps | 223 ms |
Features of ExpressVPN
Lightway Turbo, a Windows-only setting that splits your traffic across several connections at once, added just 0.45 Mbps on our UK server. That’s within normal test variation, and ping went up by 9 ms. Turbo and split tunneling can’t be used together. Split tunneling lets chosen apps use your normal connection, such as a game you’d rather keep off the VPN.
On a typical home connection, leave Turbo disabled and keep split tunneling. The apps are simple to use, though the settings are thin. If you prefer to fine-tune protocols, encryption, or server lists yourself, NordVPN and PIA offer more control. If you’re deciding between ExpressVPN and NordVPN, our head-to-head test compares them feature by feature.
Our Favorite Feature: Smart Location
Smart Location chooses a server location for you when you open the app, and ExpressVPN says it weighs download speed, ping, and distance to do it. One click connects you, which keeps ExpressVPN easy for people who don’t want to compare servers.
ExpressVPN covers 113 countries, and its 30-day money-back guarantee leaves time to test it on your own connection. If renewal costs are a concern, Surfshark, Proton VPN, and PIA cost less over time.
5. Private Internet Access: Cheapest Fast VPN

Pros
- Full Linux app
- Unlimited simultaneous connections
- Port forwarding on European servers
- MACE ad blocking
- Choice of encryption strength
Cons
- Slower on Japanese servers
- Starts on OpenVPN on Windows
- Cluttered, dated app
PIA averaged a 12.7% speed loss, and its Japanese server explains most of it. That server kept 141.61 Mbps, a 25.6% speed loss. Its UK and US results, by contrast, were within 6 Mbps of NordVPN’s. Even its slowest server stayed far above Netflix’s recommended speed for 4K, so you’ll mainly notice the difference on large downloads from Asia.
PIA Speed Test Results
| Server Location | Download | Upload | Ping |
| Baseline (no VPN) | 190.36 Mbps | 19.37 Mbps | 10 ms |
| UK | 181.15 Mbps | 18.92 Mbps | 48 ms |
| US | 175.68 Mbps | 18.21 Mbps | 150 ms |
| Japan | 141.61 Mbps | 16.65 Mbps | 270 ms |
Features of Private Internet Access
On Windows, PIA connects over OpenVPN out of the box, and there’s no automatic protocol setting. I switched it to WireGuard by hand for every test, and you should do the same before you start. The app itself looks cluttered and dated on Windows, though once WireGuard is set, you won’t spend much time in it.
Port forwarding is useful for torrents with few seeders, since other peers can start transfers with you directly. It works in Canada and Europe, but not on US servers, so pick a European location for torrenting. MACE, PIA’s ad blocker, also filters known malware domains, which helps on sites full of pop-up ads.
Our Favorite Feature: Customizable Encryption
If you stay on OpenVPN, PIA offers two encryption strengths. The 128-bit setting is the default and still secure, while 256-bit is the stronger alternative. The lighter setting puts less load on your device’s processor, which helps on older laptops and phones.
PIA covers 91 countries, and its apps include Linux and Apple TV as well as the usual computers and phones. If price is your main concern, our guide to cheap VPNs compares more budget VPNs.
Which VPN Protocol Is the Fastest?
WireGuard, NordLynx, and ExpressVPN’s Lightway were the fastest protocols in our tests. OpenVPN came close in its UDP form, but its TCP form was much slower:
- NordVPN: a 7.8% average speed loss on NordLynx and 9.5% on OpenVPN.
- ExpressVPN: on the UK server, Lightway and WireGuard were within 1.3 Mbps of each other.
- Surfshark: OpenVPN UDP was almost as fast as WireGuard, while OpenVPN TCP lost more than half the speed.
The difference comes from how OpenVPN sends data. UDP sends it without waiting for confirmation, which keeps it quick. TCP confirms every piece of data, which makes it slower but harder for some networks to block. So start with WireGuard, NordLynx, or Lightway, switch to OpenVPN UDP if they won’t connect, and use TCP only on networks that block the rest.
Which Features Slow a VPN Down?
Extra security layers send your traffic further or wrap it in more encryption, and some cost far more speed than others. Compared with a direct connection to the same country, these were the results:
- Proton VPN Stealth: 1.9% slower
- NordVPN Double VPN: 2.9% slower, with 4 ms more ping
- Surfshark MultiHop: 2.9% slower
- NordVPN obfuscated servers: 9.2% slower
- Proton VPN Secure Core: 12.1% slower, with 84 ms more ping
- NordVPN NordWhisper: 12.8% slower, with ping up to 808 ms during uploads
- PIA Multi-Hop through a proxy: 20.1% slower, with 122 ms more ping
Stealth, Double VPN, and Surfshark’s MultiHop cost the least. Secure Core, NordWhisper, and PIA’s proxy cost the most. Enable them when a network or a privacy concern calls for it, and disable them for streaming, gaming, and big downloads. Tor over VPN, which you’d use to access the dark web, is slower still, because your traffic also passes through three Tor relays.
Which Server Location Is the Fastest?
The fastest server is almost always the closest one. On German servers, close to our PC in Europe, NordVPN lost only 0.5% of the speed and Proton VPN 1.3%. In Japan, the same two VPNs lost about 16% of their speed, and ping there was above 200 ms on every VPN. So there isn’t one fastest VPN country.
The fastest country is the one nearest to you, as long as its servers aren’t overloaded. A busy server slows down, so if a nearby server feels slow, reconnect to another one in the same country. When a show is only available in one country, pick the server in that country closest to you, such as New York from Europe for US streaming.
Can a VPN Make Your Internet Faster?
Usually not. A VPN adds encryption and distance, so in our tests, every VPN was slower than our connection without one. The closest was NordVPN’s German server, at 189.41 Mbps out of 190.36. There’s one exception. Some ISPs slow down specific traffic, such as video streaming or torrents, which is called throttling.
A VPN encrypts your traffic, so the ISP can’t see whether it’s video or a torrent and can’t single it out. In that case, your speed can go up. It won’t help with a data cap or with a plan that’s simply slow. NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, and PIA don’t limit bandwidth or speed on their paid plans.
Are VPNs Slower on Phones?
Yes. Our phone tests used home Wi-Fi at 54.7 Mbps, and the speed losses were bigger than on the wired PC:
- iPhone 17 Pro: from a 13.6% speed loss on NordVPN to 24.2% on PIA
- Galaxy S26 Ultra: from a 20.3% speed loss on NordVPN to 28.5% on PIA
NordVPN was the quickest VPN on each phone. A phone has less processing power for encryption, and Wi-Fi adds delays of its own, so a nearby server and a fast protocol help even more there. Our Android VPN rankings include battery results too.
How to Speed Up Your VPN
A slow VPN connection is usually fixable in a few minutes.
- Connect to the nearest server. A nearby server keeps speed loss and ping low.
- Use WireGuard or the VPN’s own protocol. NordLynx and Lightway are the defaults on NordVPN and ExpressVPN, and they kept the most speed in our tests.
- Disable extra layers you don’t use. NordWhisper, PIA’s proxy, and Secure Core cost the most speed.
- Reconnect at busy times. Evening traffic can slow a crowded server, and reconnecting usually puts you on a quieter one.
- Use split tunneling. Send games or large downloads through your normal connection and keep the VPN for the rest.
- Use a cable where you can. A wired connection avoids Wi-Fi interference, which adds to the VPN’s own delay.
Is a Free VPN Fast Enough?
Some are. Two free VPNs came close to paid speeds. PrivadoVPN’s free UK server kept 180.04 Mbps, and Windscribe’s kept 182.21 Mbps. The catch is data. Their free plans come with a 10 GB monthly allowance (Windscribe’s after you confirm your email), which lasted about five hours of HD video in our tests. At the limit, PrivadoVPN drops to 1 Mbps, while Windscribe cuts the connection off.
On Proton VPN’s free plan, data is unlimited, but the server is assigned at random. Our free account was assigned servers in the Netherlands and the US, and it lost 19.3% of its speed on average. Hide.me and TunnelBear lost about 30% of their speed on their free plans. Speed is only one of the differences between free and paid VPNs, and our list of the best VPN services covers the paid ones in full.
How Much Speed Do You Need?
Less than you might think. Netflix recommends 5 Mbps for Full HD and 15 Mbps for 4K. Every VPN we ranked kept over 140 Mbps on every server, about nine times Netflix’s 4K recommendation. Live sports, such as a Formula 1 race, and catch-up TV like BBC iPlayer play smoothly at those speeds too.

Games depend on ping. On nearby servers, the five VPNs added about 30 to 40 ms, which is fine for online shooters such as Black Ops 7. Servers on another continent added about 120 ms or more, too much for fast-paced games.
Conclusion
So which VPN keeps your connection closest to its normal speed? In our tests, it was NordVPN. It had the lowest average speed loss, led on US servers, and had the lowest ping to Japan, so it stays quick near and far. On Windows, quit any other VPN before you connect to avoid its one recurring fault. Two groups should look elsewhere.
If you keep a second VPN installed for work, Proton VPN avoids NordVPN’s Windows clash, and Stealth costs it almost no speed. If price comes first, PIA cost the least and still left enough speed for 4K.
Before you switch VPNs over a slow connection, check the server location and the protocol. A nearby server and a WireGuard-based protocol or Lightway explained most of the fast results we saw.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which VPN has the fastest connection speeds in the United States?
NordVPN has the fastest connection speeds in the United States. Its servers in dozens of US cities keep a nearby one available, and it’s the best overall VPN to use in the USA.
What is the fastest VPN?
The fastest VPN is NordVPN. Its NordLynx protocol keeps speed loss low on nearby and distant servers, and features such as Double VPN add a second server with very little slowdown.
How to get the fastest VPN connection?
The fastest VPN connection comes from a nearby server on a modern protocol such as WireGuard, NordLynx, or Lightway. Disabling multi-hop modes and enabling a VPN ad blocker also helps pages load faster.
Which country has the fastest VPN servers?
The country closest to the user has the fastest VPN servers. Shorter distances mean lower ping and less speed loss, so European users see the best speeds from servers in nearby countries such as Germany.
Does a VPN improve internet speed?
No, not usually. Encryption and extra distance make a connection slightly slower. The exception is ISP throttling, where hiding the type of traffic can restore normal speeds for streaming or torrenting.
What is the fastest VPN protocol?
The fastest VPN protocols are WireGuard and NordVPN’s NordLynx, which builds on it, along with ExpressVPN’s Lightway. OpenVPN over UDP comes close, while OpenVPN over TCP is much slower.
