GreenGeeks is a popular eco-friendly web hosting company. During our GreenGeeks review, we found it great overall, and appreciated its valiant efforts to dwindle our planet’s pollution. Unfortunately, web hosting leaves a considerable carbon footprint, which isn’t great for our environment.
This company begs to differ. It relies on renewable energy to provide reliable hosting services packed in flexible subscription plans. GreenGeeks buys three times the electricity it consumes in RECs, with the goal to reduce its carbon output and keep things clean as a whistle.
But let’s put ecology to the side — is GreenGeeks any good, or is it just another shady company? To put it simply, GreenGeeks works well, and is fast, secure, and reliable enough, but with some shortcomings that we’ve discovered in this comprehensive review for 2026.
Everything you need to know about GreenGeeks web hosting is below. Let’s get the ball rolling.
GreenGeeks
GreenGeeks is an excellent eco-friendly web hosting company with low introductory costs, fast speeds, ample security, class-defining customer support, and a beginner-friendly cPanel. It's, however, plagued by steep renewal prices and the lack of hosting variety found in other hosting services.
Pros
- Impressive performance
- Multiple server locations
- Easy hosting management
- Immaculate security
- Prompt customer support
Cons
- Higher renewal costs
- Free SSL needs manual setup

GreenGeeks Hosting Plans Review
At the very start of this GreenGeeks evaluation, we’ll discuss its hosting plans. Compared to Bluehost and Hostinger, this provider doesn’t offer the most variety. As can be seen in the table, GreenGeeks comes with standard shared (web) hosting and VPS hosting.
| Web Hosting | ✅ |
| VPS Hosting | ✅ |
| Cloud Hosting | ❌ |
| Dedicated Hosting | ❌ |
| WooCommerce/WordPress Hosting | ✅ |
| Reseller Hosting | ✅ |
The company advertises its WooCommerce and WordPress hosting, but these are the same shared hosting plans. I mean, WooCommerce is a WordPress e-commerce “expansion” and WordPress is supported in all GreenGeeks shared hosting offers.
These plans (shared, WooCommerce, and WordPress) cost identically, except for the reseller hosting plans that offer different features and cost considerably more. Unfortunately, GreenGeeks lacks dedicated servers and doesn’t offer cloud-based hosting.
To get these, you’ll have to opt for providers like Hostinger (cloud hosting), InMotion Hosting (dedicated), or Bluehost (all major hosting types).
Hosting Plans Prices & Features
In this GreenGeeks review, it’s vital to address all the major features and see how they work.
Shared/WooCommerce/WordPress Hosting
The cheapest Lite plan starts at $2.95/mo and it’s ideal for small websites and blogs. For example, it can be used to build wedding websites, but it’s not great for robust online stores. This entry-level plan offers:
- One website hosting
- Standard performance level
- 25 GB of storage
- AI website builder
- Free SSL, domain, CDN, and Nightly Backup
- Managed WordPress hosting
- Caching
- Multi-user access
- 50 email accounts
- 30-day money-back guarantee
As you can see, this plan is all but underwhelming. With managed WordPress hosting features, you’ll get automatic updates and much-needed optimization. Each plan also has 300% green energy match, and every purchase means you’ve planted one tree — great!

It’s worth noting that a free domain for a year is here, so that investment is out of the window at the start. The Pro plan is next, and it’s $4.95/mo. You’ll get everything from Lite, with:
- WordPress Repair tool
- On-demand backups
- Unlimited website hosting
- Better performance
- 50 GB of storage
- Unlimited email accounts
Given the price, this plan is phenomenal, and is the one we used to test GreenGeeks for this review. Especially noteworthy are unlimited websites and on-demand backups that we used to create backup copies of our sites at any moment. Finally, the Premium plan is $8.95/mo.
It includes object caching, free AlphaSSL, and a dedicated IP, with 100 GB of space and the “best” performance. Considering everything you get, GreenGeeks is a stellar value for money. However, there’s a huge issue we’d like to address in this GreenGeeks analysis for 2026.
Renewal prices. They’re terribly high. The three plans renew at $12.95/mo, $17.95/mo, and $29.95/mo from cheapest to priciest. In comparison, Hostinger’s Cloud Startup plan, which is better than all GreenGeeks shared plans, renews at $27.99/mo. Do you see the issue?
VPS Hosting
Now, what about VPS hosting? We listed some great VPS hosts here but GreenGeeks hasn’t made it to the list. It’s not because it’s bad. In our review, it was fast, reliable, and packed with features. It’s because it’s VERY expensive. The 4 GB plan starts at a huge $69.95/mo.
The 8 GB plan is $129.95/mo, while the 16 GB plan is $179.95/mo. Their features are displayed below, but essentially, you get your cPanel, a free SSL, and a Softaculous license, which allows you to install WordPress, Drupal, and other CMS without hassle.

All plans are limited to 10 TB transfer, with storage going from 75 GB SSD to 250 GB SSD.
Again, we’ll draw a parallel to Hostinger, whose most expensive KVM 8 VPS plan is roughly $20/mo. It has 32 GB of RAM (GreenGeeks has 16 GB), 400 GB of NVMe storage, and more worldwide data centers. Don’t get us wrong — GreenGeeks has enough firepower.
However, in our review, we couldn’t help but think how inappropriately priced it was at times, especially when compared to its “dirty” (non-eco-friendly) rivals. But when you think about it, maybe they could’ve priced their services higher if they advertised as green web hosting. We can only guess now.
Reseller Hosting
If you want to start your hosting business, you can be a reseller. Simply purchase the resources from GreenGeeks and resell them to those in need. The provider offers three plans with the following prices:
- RH-25 at $19.95/mo
- RH-80 at $34.95/mo
- RH-50 at $24.95/mo

The one in the middle is the most popular because it offers the most generous resources. Generally speaking, you’ll get 60 to 160 GB of storage, 600 to 1,600 GB of transfer, and 25 to 80 cPanel accounts, with free cPanel migrations, SSL, and the company’s diligent support.
We were satisfied with reseller plans in our GreenGeeks review, especially because of timely customer support and easy hosting management. Granted, you’ll find cheaper options, but this one’s value is not that bad.
Ease of Use & Hosting Management
Having tested dozens of web hosting services, GreenGeeks felt no different to us. This is especially reflected in its easy-to-use dashboard from which you can effortlessly get to your cPanel. cPanel is one of our favorite “environments” along with Site Tools from SiteGround.
The initial hosting management dashboard houses your menus on the left. The rest of the screen is reserved for the selected feature. For example, when you click on Hosting, you’ll be able to see your bandwidth usage, remaining storage, and the status of your plan.

Choosing Security lets you activate your SSL, while the Domains menu explores your currently active websites. To enter the cPanel, you can use the dedicated “cPanel” button next to your active websites. Click it, and boom — you’ll notice that it looks slightly different.
GreenGeeks has slapped a custom skin on top, differentiating itself from other cPanel hosting alternatives. This time, the right-hand side is reserved for basic information, while the larger, left portion lets you access files, email tools, databases, and other vital features.

From here, you can also access the Softaculous installer or your Backup Wizard to perform on-demand backups if you’ve paid for them. In the same fashion, you can access Email Accounts for management and/or account creation. It all feels so effortless and smooth.
How to Install WordPress?
Early on, we established that GreenGeeks is suitable for WordPress websites. You can install it by uploading its files to the server and using the File Manager. We did this with Softaculous, which allowed us to set up WordPress in virtually a few clicks. It took a few minutes, too.
Once we set up WordPress, we signed in with our admin account, installed a few plug-ins, and made our GreenGeeks test website for the performance evaluation later on. After installing WordPress, you can seamlessly install WooCommerce to start selling online.
Remember that each GreenGeeks plan has managed WordPress, which means you can set up automatic updates and performance optimization, which we always recommend.
How to Add an SSL Certificate?
When it comes to the SSL certificate, GreenGeeks sort of “skimps” on its activation. Most web hosting services will activate it for you, but here, you have to do it manually, which is a bit tedious. Luckily, it’s pretty simple:
- Go to the Security tab.
- Click Add SSL Certificate.
- Choose Let’s Encrypt SSL to activate it.
GreenGeeks offers AlphaSSL as another option, but it’s available only in the Premium plan.
GreenGeeks Performance Test: Is It Fast Enough?
GreenGeeks has all the prerequisites to be a fast and reliable web host. For one, there are four data center locations:
- Chicago, US
- Monteral, CA
- Amsterdam, NL
- Singapore, SG
Then, there’s built-in caching, which speeds up page-loading times. Its servers are also based on SSD and use at least 128 GB of DDR3 RAM, with range-topping gigabit connectivity. Drawing from our experience with GreenGeeks, the provider is indeed pretty fast overall.
We tested its best-value Pro plan by making a WordPress website. To ensure we challenge GreenGeeks properly, we built a website from the ground up, with some images, a few interactive elements, and a populated blog section. More or less, standard stuff.
Good to know is that we selected the Chicago server for our website. We’re based in the USA, as well, which made our choice more than obvious.
GTmetrix Performance Results
Okay, so let’s start with the raw speed test results. As explained, our website was hosted on the Chicago server, so naturally, we used one of many US-based servers from GTmetrix to test GreenGeeks. Here are the results:
- FLT (Fully Loaded Time) — 1.9 s
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — 699 ms
- TTFB (Time to First Byte) — 126 ms
- TTI (Time to Interactive) — 893 ms
- TBT (Total Blocking Time) — 0 ms
These are some respectable results for shared web hosting. FLT, which should ideally be under 3 seconds, is just under 2 seconds, so that’s an excellent result. TTI or Time to Interactive is well under 1 second, resulting in a snappy experience on the user side.
LCP or Largest Contentful Paint is just a smidge under 700 ms. Compared to its rivals, GreenGeeks is on par and doesn’t go over the industry average. I mean, that’s terrific. Just out of curiosity, we performed another GTmetrix test using its server in the United Kingdom.
The results were slightly weaker. For example, FLT jumped to 2.4 seconds, LCP was 1.1 seconds, while TTI went up to 1 second. These are still inside Google’s recommendations, so even people visiting the site from Europe or the UK will receive a nearly identical treatment.
Uptime and Response Times
We always praise Hostinger for its impeccable performance, response times, and uptime. However, one would think that GreenGeeks isn’t very reliable because of its ecologically derived energy. Well, it’s possible to be “green” and still offer more than enough stability.
For example, in our GreenGeeks assessment, we detected that the provider adheres to its 99.9% uptime guarantee during a Pingdom test. We conducted the test for the 3 previous months and found just 3 outages that resulted in a total downtime of merely a few minutes.
Its average response time was 636 ms, which is a speck above the ideal 600 ms value. That can be attributed to its high maximum response time, which was eventually offset by the minimal response time that was just below 380 ms. Overall, GreenGeeks performs well.
However, it’s no secret that Hostinger and SiteGator are slightly faster when tested in the same conditions. If you’d rather stick to GreenGeeks and its crabon-offsetting policy, it’s good to know you don’t have to sacrifice performance just to stay on the greener side.
How Safe and Secure Is GreenGeeks?
So let’s discuss the security of GreenGeeks. We know that security is important for web hosting, as much as it’s important to cloud storage, VPN services, and so on. Luckily, GreenGeeks doesn’t skimp even on the tiniest features, no matter which plan you choose.
As mentioned, you’ll get a free SSL certificate. While you have to activate it manually, it’s there, ready to be claimed for all your websites. Earliner in this GreenGeeks review, we mentioned website backups. They can be automatic or on-demand, depending on the plan.

What we haven’t mentioned is:
- 24/7/365 server monitoring. GreenGeeks’ automated software monitors each server every 10 seconds. A human representative is also present and monitors each server every 30 minutes.
- WAF. GreenGeeks uses state-of-the-art, AI-powered protection for web applications.
- Anti-malware solution. The provider also scans your website for malware in real time and wipes them clean effortlessly, keeping your website safe and sound.
- DDoS protection. GreenGeeks’ experts manage this aspect, which protects your site against the so-called Distributed Denial of Service.
GreenGeeks include various “passive” features, such as spam protection, auto-updates for all apps, including WordPress, and many more. After examining GreenGeeks top to bottom, we found it difficult to locate specific downsides and holes in its security. It’s immaculate.
You have everything you need, and more, without the need to buy security features separately.
Customer Support of GreenGeeks
Okay, so customer support is another aspect we inspected in our review of GreenGeeks. We can say this is a timely customer service with whom we had plenty of good moments. It’s available via live chat (24/7), email, and even phone. Plus, there’s a knowledge base, which lets you look for help on your own.
By far the best option is live chat, but don’t expect instant answers, as it’s often the case with Hostinger and SiteGround. In our test, we had to wait for roughly 3-5 minutes to get an initial response. As for email support, GreenGeeks usually responds in no more than 30 mins.

Its phone support is live from 9 AM to 12 AM EST, and best of all, you get two numbers. One toll-free and one international. We tested all three means of support and ended up settling for live chat. It’s the most convenient, plus, it’s great if you’re too shy to talk over the phone.
GreenGeeks’ knowledge base is beefy, too. With a bit of effort, you can find help even for more stubborn and specific problems. Luckily for budget users looking for cheap hosting, even those on the Lite plan can enjoy premium customer support and have a team of experts solve their inconveniences.
The Final Verdict: Is GreenGeeks Good?
Let’s address the question you’ve been waiting for — is GreenGeeks good in 2026? We will say it’s good. Besides, we had a blast with it in our review, especially because of its ease of use, up-to-par performance, and top-of-the-line security. Finding flaws is very difficult.
However, as this was an in-depth review, we had to nitpick a bit. GreenGeeks has fairly high renewal prices and doesn’t offer the best hosting variety. The former is, we think, a much bigger issue, because Hostinger fills in both gaps. It’s cheaper and has more hosting types.
The fact that GreenGeeks charges premium for its VPS plans doesn’t help it either — again, Hostinger has cheaper and more packed VPS hosting plans, too. If you’re going to get it, be ready for a considerable price bump after the first year. Are you okay with that?
If so, you’ll have the “greenest” web hosting on your hands and finally be able to say you’re offsetting your carbon footprint like a boss. If you don’t give two cents about ecology and the whole carbon demonization, you will enjoy Hostinger as a perfect alternative a bit more.
