Comparing a CMS and a website builder might seem a bit odd. A CMS offers greater design freedom but comes at the cost of ease of use. On the other hand, a website builder, such as Wix, makes it easier to create and manage a website, though it provides slightly less freedom. So, which one should you choose in 2026 — Wix or Drupal?

Ultimately, the choice boils down to your preferences and experience with website building.

We prefer Wix over Drupal, and we’ll explain why in this comparison. However, after extensively testing both, we found Drupal to be extremely capable in skilled hands. Let’s dive deeper into our Drupal vs Wix comparison to help you determine which option is best for you.

Designing a Website With Drupal and Wix

Drupal and Wix share completely different stances when it comes to website design.

Drupal Website Editor

We have a tutorial on how to build a website in an hour or so where we used Wix. If you glance at that tutorial, you’ll see that the process is approachable and simple even for beginners. However, Drupal isn’t a drag-and-drop website builder. It’s… more complex.

Drupal is heavily reliant on coding, so if you have no prior experience, expect to not have a clue how to use it. It’s not impossible to learn how to use it over time but you’ll have to know coding languages, whose learning and grasping takes a long time. It’s not all negative, though.

Drupal has a handful of third-party integrations, one of which is Drupal Layout Builder.

We tested this tool and were surprised at how simple it can be to design a website in Drupal. With a drag-and-drop editor and a more “visual” approach, you don’t have to be an expert in website creation. Albeit, it’s recommended that you have at least some experience before setting foot on Drupal’s soil.

Wix Website Editor

This is a hassle-free solution to design your website. Forget about coding and other complexities. Wix allows you to design a website using its ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence) tool, where you’ll just answer a few questions and let Wix forge the website for you — very neat!

If you’re not using Wix for AI-driven website building, you can start off with a template.

Wix has 900+ of them and all are free, so pick one, and work your way up. Its drag-and-drop editor is smooth, responsive, and easy to use. What’s more, it doesn’t lack design freedom, as you can completely revamp the selected template and make something unique.

A plus for Wix is its Wix Studio, which allows you to craft responsive websites and achieve a greater level of control over the creation process. If you want to code, its Velo tool endorses custom code integration, allowing your imagination to flourish, if this is what you want.

We like just how versatile Wix is. As a beginner, you can use it to make a stunning website but you can do that as an expert who can get more control if need be. However, the main purpose of a website builder like Wix is to streamline the creation process, which succeeds with flying colors.

So, the first round definitely belongs to Wix. It caters to a wider audience and is welcoming for both beginners and seasoned veterans. Drupal is more for the latter, and because it’s more complicated to set up and use, it won’t be great for every type of user.

Wix vs Drupal: Templates Comparison

We love it when the website builder has ample freedom in terms of the number of templates.

If you look around, you’ll see that, out of all website builders, Wix has the most templates — around 900. However, if we compare Wix to WordPress or even Drupal, which is also a CMS, Wix falls short because of the number of templates. Drupal has 3,000+ of them; a lot more!

Now, it’s not all about numbers, we get it.

Wix’s templates are some of the best we’ve seen. Plus, there’s in-depth categorization, which allows you to locate the right template for your needs. Are you looking to start a website for photography services? Type in that term and boom — you’ll find dozens of bespoke templates.

The same goes for different services, portfolios, or small, personal websites.

Drupal’s 3,000 templates are, unfortunately for Wix, equally good. Moreover, Drupal allows you to design a template yourself or even upload the existing one and work on it from there. Given its design freedom, Drupal allows you to play around a lot more, so it can be fun.

Drupal Themes

Though, to play around with Drupal, you have to know the rules of the game i.e. coding!

The good news is that Drupal’s themes are free and easy to apply to the website. Wix has a nasty habit of not allowing you to change the website template once it’s live, so if you make up your mind, you’ll have to start from zero, as you’ll lose all data on the website.

This is a no-brainer. Drupal takes the round by a long shot, thanks to more templates and superior design freedom. As long as you know how to take full advantage of it, Drupal’s 3,000+ free templates will undoubtedly address all your needs and desires.

E-Commerce Features Analysis

E-commerce tools are available in both Drupal and Wix but their approach to the subject matter differs.

To be precise, you’ll get all you need to sell online, such as:

  • Inventory management
  • Discount codes
  • Custom shipping rates
  • User accounts
  • Customer accounts
  • Reviews
  • Multi-channel selling
  • POS, and much more.

However, Wix has all of these tools built-in, while Drupal, like WordPress, relies on third-party tools. A CMS or Content Management System is usually more versatile BUT only if you use third-party apps, which, in most cases, cost additionally. That’s the main gripe.

Selling Online With Drupal and Wix

When you open up an online store, you’ll be able to add products and descriptions right away. Once the store is filled with your products and you start selling, the first thing to take care of will be inventory management.

Wix and Drupal take a similar approach, and while the latter is more capable, the former is simpler to use. For example, Drupal’s inventory management and product categorization is more detailed, with the option to handle batch inventory updates and product variations.

In Wix, you’ll be notified of low stock, as well as be able to include product variations, colors, etc. One thing we love about both is the ability to add user accounts if you need more people managing and maintaining your online shop.

An added person can be an editor or administrator, plus, you can assign each collaborator specific roles. For instance, one person can handle shipping, the other can manage your inventory, and you can have a collaborator who works on the SEO aspect of your site.

Whether you choose Wix or Drupal, selling online will be a breeze. Just keep in mind that you’ll need a variety of third-party apps to “beef up” Drupal and make the most out of it. Wix has them too but the majority of sales tools are built-in, requiring no effort to use them.

Shipping & Payment Vendors

On the shipping front, Wix takes the lead because, again, everything is already built-in. You can effortlessly configure shipping methods and rates from the dashboard, as well as set up custom shipping for specific products. Wix also allows you to use a flat shipping rate.

Like Shopify, which we compared to Wix, it enables you to rely on various couriers like DHL and UPS, where you can get favorable shipping rates. With POS in all plans, Wix also lets you sell in person, so the user can, for instance, pick the bought product in your warehouse.

Wix Payments handles your transactions and offers 80 payment vendors. You get all the popular vendors like credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Square, Stripe, and so on. Best of all, they’re easy to set up and the transaction fees aren’t that high — 2.9% + $0.3 per transaction.

Now, Drupal is a different ballgame and it handles its shipping and payment aspects, you’ll have to use third-party solutions. This applies to shipping, where you’ll have to pick a desired third-party app, which would also calculate shipping rates for you — Wix does that automatically, for example.

Payments-wise, you’ll be able to integrate the vendors you need, based on the targeted market. It’s hard to tell how small or large your transaction fees will be because they’re dependent on the vendor. Selling online with Drupal is much harder, all in all.

Wix is a superior option for most e-commerce needs. Thanks to tons of built-in sales tools and in-house payment and shipping configurations, Wix is a joy to use, even for beginners. Drupal relies on third-party apps for e-commerce and it’s more complicated to set up, so it can be cumbersome to use.

SEO & Marketing: Which One Is More Efficient?

Both Drupal and Wix excel in SEO but with different approaches.

SEO

One thing we found is that both allow you to customize your meta titles, XML sitemaps, alt titles, and so on. Drupal, of course, “forces” you to code to access more advanced information and be able to alter it.

In Wix, you can use its SEO Checklist, complete the given tasks, and set your website on a path to success. What’s more, you can access all the SEO tools from the dashboard, as well as enable third-party integrations from Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and Semrush.

Such integrations are completed in minutes and you immediately gain access to more valuable information. Our favorite is Semrush, which aids keyword research and can later be used for blogging, where keyword optimization is vital. Wix is one of the best options for bloggers in 2026, by the way.

Drupal is also a great option for blogging and you can do a lot to enhance your blog’s SEO. Bear in mind that Drupal relies on the so-called modules, which add different functionalities to the website, among which is blogging. So again, to set everything up for SEO and blogging, you have to integrate modules.

That, yet again, requires more coding skill.

Marketing

If you’re looking to maximize your marketing potential with Drupal, you’ll have to rely on its modules. Here, you’ll find plenty of solid options for social media integrations, which allow you to advertise there and reach more people. Wix does this painfully and more pleasantly.

You have all the marketing tools you need right on the dashboard.

Wix Email Marketing Template

From here, you can produce Instagram and Facebook ad campaigns, and thanks to its AI, optimize them properly for better reach. Email marketing is integral to Wix, which lets you send 5,000 monthly emails for free, or more if you pay a few dollars monthly on top.

We also must mention Wix Video Maker, which endorses video promotions that you can share on social media. This, paired with customizable email campaigns, makes Wix a joy to use for boosting your online presence.

Drupal’s downfall lies in its heavy reliance on modules, which take time and skill to implement. While they function extraordinarily, we prefer Wix and its straightforward approach where SEO, marketing, and blogging tools and features are already built-in and ready to be used.

Wix vs Drupal: Pricing and Plans

Whether you consider Drupal, Wix, Joomla, or any other CMS, you’ll be looking at free, open-source products. A CMS will cost you nothing and that would, in theory, conclude this Drupal vs Wix comparison because the former would win. In short, that’s an ignorant argument.

Drupal Pricing & Plans

To use Drupal, you have to pay for hosting. Then, to make a website, you have to pay for a domain name. After that, you have to pay for a theme, and after that, you’ll need some third-party apps to enhance the functionality of your website. Are all of these free? Never!

Here’s the rundown of the costs associated with using Drupal:

  • Hosting starts at around $2.99/mo if you choose Hostinger, which is considered the best cheap web host. After the initial period, whether it’s Hostinger or another provider, you’ll pay an average of $5-$10 a month.
  • Domain name comes bundled in with Hostinger and a few other hosting providers. It’s free for a year but after that, you’ll spend at least $15/year.
  • Drupal themes are usually free but if you need a better-looking, premium theme, there’s a one-time fee that starts at ~$20. Some themes are paid monthly and are way more expensive.
  • Drupal plug-ins and modules are usually free but some are premium and their prices range from a few monthly dollars to a lot more.

So, at the very least, you’ll have to spend for hosting, a domain name, and a theme. However, it’s ungrateful to discuss how much is Drupal because it depends on what you need. Basic needs will cost very little but should you desire more, be ready to splurge on everything we mentioned.

Wix Pricing & Plans

Wix’s ebbs and flows can be tracked more easily because there aren’t any. You know how much you’ll invest and what you’ll get for the money. Wix starts at $17/mo for the Light plan, which is great if you don’t want e-commerce. If you do, expect to spend $29/mo for the Core plan.

Wix Price Update
© Wix.com

Wix recommends its Business plan at $36/mo but you’ll agree it’s pricey for some people. The good news is that all plans have a free domain for a year, so you don’t have that investment right away, plus, you get 900+ free templates, making this the “final” price.

Get the Best Price on Wix

Wix’s apps will cost some money, but as it already has plenty of features built-in, you won’t need to rely heavily on them. Wix also has a free plan, which is nice for “personal” websites, as free website builders usually aren’t the best. Sticking to its paid plans works exceptionally.

As you can see, you can add up to 100 collaborators and enjoy up to unlimited storage space. Multi-cloud hosting is here, as well, plus Wix Payments, a marketing suite, SEO tools, and more.

Lest we forget a risk-free 14-day money-back guarantee, which lets you test it for free.

This round is a tie and that’s because it’s hard to gauge the cost when we have two different systems in place. Drupal’s cost can be very low or very high, while Wix has a “fixed” cost, based on the chosen plan. Depending on your needs, you can end up paying more for Drupal or vice versa. It’s extremely hard to judge even for us.

Customer Support

Drupal doesn’t have “direct” customer support and everything you’ll find on its website will be limited. There is some documentation but understandably, Drupal can’t help you with thousands of modules and templates you’ll find online. This leaves us with seeking help “on the foot”.

Drupal Support
© Drupal

By that, we mean various community forums, Drupal-dedicated Q&A platforms, and more.

Wix is a well-established platform with bespoke customer support that works 24/7 and is available via live chat in multiple languages. Phone support is even there, along with a community forum, where you can chat and learn something new from other Wix users.

Wix Support

Wix’s on-site support is complemented by FAQs and comprehensive guides so that you can solve the issue yourself if need be.

Wix has noticeably better customer support that’s not even comparable to Drupal. It’s way better than having to dig online for answers and ask around for specific things. Wix’s centralized customer support service works wonderfully, and above all, it’s there 24/7 to handle all your requests.

Website Security

If you’re concerned about security, Wix and Drupal will do their best to remove even the tiniest crumbles of concern. In Wix’s case, you can expect reliable web hosting with anti-threat measures such as Level 1 PCI compliance, free SSL, TLS encryption, and DDoS protection.

Wix employs a 24/7/365 website monitoring system, which catches all threats and promptly removes them, preventing them from harming your website. As an open-source CMS, Drupal’s security is admirable, with an array of tools to keep your website clean as a whistle.

However, the good old modules creep in again, and through them, you can enhance your website security further. We go back to their implementation, which requires a bit of skill and knowledge but if you have them, you’ll no doubt be able to create a secure environment.

Like WordPress or Joomla, Drupal is all about putting you in the driver’s seat and the same goes for security.

If you want to get extra, you have to cross the extra mile but this time, on foot.

Security-wise, Wix and Drupal are on par and will do their best to properly secure your website. Security enhancements are possible on both sides, though they’re harder on Drupal because you have to implement its modules. At their “basic”, both are more than equipped for top-to-bottom protection.

Drupal vs Wix: The Final Verdict

Comparing a CMS and a website builder is ungrateful because they target different user bases.

However, in our Wix vs Drupal comparison, despite the differences, we think it’s safe to say that Wix is a better option. This is primarily because of its ease of use, lots of quality templates, excellent SEO tools, strong marketing suite, and affordable prices for a website builder.

Wix is, simply put, a more suitable choice for both beginners and advanced users.

Try Wix risk-free today

While Drupal is outstanding in its own right, it’s crucial to understand that it’s NOT for everyone. It targets a specific “layer” of tech-savvy users who preferably know coding and love indulging in all the technical fuss for the highest level of freedom.

If you’d rather focus on the front end and let the rest be managed by someone else, Wix is the right choice. If you like complete freedom and don’t want to leave anything to chance, choose Drupal.
