DC Studios needs a bit of a pick-me-up after the box office and critical disappointment of Supergirl and, based on this new trailer, director James Watkins’ Clayface might just be the ticket. The movie’s first official trailer doesn’t lean quite as heavily into the body horror of its harrowing teaser, but it’s still pretty unsettling. And yes, that haunting version of The Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize??” still underscores the whole thing.

The film’s official logline reads, “Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self… but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiraling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.”

Based on the scene in the trailer in which Matt takes a pair of cuticle scissors to some skin that’s blocking his eye while on a moving airplane, it’s not difficult to see why the movie has earned an R rating. We all know that’s not gonna end well, right?

Clayface stars Tom Rhys Harries (The Gentlemen) as Matt Hagen, Naomi Ackie (Mickey 17) as Dr. Caitlin Corr, and Max Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale) as John Pearlman. It’s directed by James Watkins from a script by horror master Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Clayface opens in theaters on October 23.
