D-Link is showing off the DGL-4300, the first ‘gaming router’ designed to optimize Ethernet traffic for ultimate gaming speeds. At first I discounted it—who cares about ‘optimized packets’ when you’re already on a LAN?—but then I read the bit about how the router gives priority to gaming packets while still allowing mass file transfers to occur in the background. Anybody that’s ever been to a LAN party knows they are really just cover stories to meet away from significant others and transfer herculean mounds of porn for later use. It’s like mid-air refueling for pornhound gamers—it really sucks if you’re trying to lase someone out of their mech when palm pilots are saturating the Ethernet.
Only 4 ports (albeit Gigabit) for $150, with Wi-Fi for another $20, though, so don’t bother for now unless you know you can use the extra pipe.
