Happy Mother’s Day to everyone—whether you are a mom, have a mom, are partnered with a mom, or just think moms are generally neat people. Do you have a mom who shared her love of science fiction with you? Tell us all about her.

My mom always joked that she introduced me to Star Trek while I was in the womb, marathoning episodes of the original series while she was pregnant with me and couldn’t sleep. She hated the whole premise behind music video channels, deeming them mindless TV watching. “I don’t mind you watching television,” she told me once, “as long as it’s something with substance, like The Next Generation.” When I was in grade school, our Saturday night ritual revolved around Deep Space Nine, Hercules, and Xena. She indulged my ridiculous DragonLance habit, but made sure my reading list contained occasional breaks for books like 1984 and Brave New World. When The Phantom Menace came out, she made the drive from Long Island to New Hampshire so that she, my brother, and I could watch it together. Even today, she occasionally sends me cool art to feature here (she has great taste, my mom), and waxes on Fringe and Warehouse 13.

I’m incredibly grateful to my mom for introducing me to so many of the things that I’ve come to love and for opening me up to new worlds and new ideas.

Tell us what your mom has shared with you? A favorite book? Nights spent watching the same TV show? Something you might not have discovered if not for her?
