About Black Jacket

Black Jacket is a blackjack-inspired roguelike deckbuilder about gambling your way out of hell, where you reshape the rules of the table with special cards and try to read the hands of restless souls who would rather keep you trapped.

You sit across from wandering souls in a kind of afterlife casino, play hands for their coins, and use those coins to bribe the ferryman and move closer to escape. As you go, you add new cards that change how the game works: forcing opponents to overcommit, raising or lowering values, peeking at your own deck, swapping cards between hands, and uncovering combinations that suddenly make previously ordinary cards much stronger.

Runs are about building and testing those combinations while managing curses, artifacts, and suits that skew the odds, so you end up playing something that feels like blackjack at first glance but is more like a rule-bending deckbuilder.

Why Should I Download Black Jacket?

Black Jacket is for people who like deckbuilders but want a clear connection to a familiar game. You are still trying to hit 21 or get close to it, but the cards you add give you more control over how your hands unfold. It then becomes less about simple luck and more about whether you can manipulate the table at the right moment.

Much of the appeal lies in how opponents are presented. You only see their hands, not their faces, and learn their playstyles and curses as their stories unfold across encounters. Some lean into aggressive betting, others bring more disruptive curses, and deepening your relationship with them is part of the loop of “breaking the cycle” rather than just beating one boss and moving on. It keeps the game from feeling purely mechanical; each run becomes a series of conversations, gambles, and small character beats layered on top of the card play.

Is Black Jacket Free?

Black Jacket is a paid game on PC. It is sold as a premium title on Steam rather than as a free-to-play casino game with chip purchases or card packs on top. After buying it, you play through the full roguelike structure, unlock new cards, discover combinations, and see story threads without a separate microtransaction layer. The core loop is built around in-game coins and artifacts you earn by winning hands and progressing deeper, not around spending real money.

Note that Steam offers a free demo of the game that you can download to discover it before deciding to buy it. Just click on the Download Demo button on  the right.

What Operating Systems Are Compatible with Black Jacket?

Black Jacket runs on Windows and needs a 64-bit system. There is no macOS or Linux version, but it is also available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

What Are the Alternatives to Black Jacket?

The Royal Writ is the closest alternative if you want another single-player roguelike deckbuilder that plays with sacrifice and battlefield positioning. It has you send animal-themed units marching across a lane-based board toward the enemy, knowing that any card that reaches the far side without a win is permanently destroyed for that run. Compared with Black Jacket, The Royal Writ is less about card values and table manipulation and more about deciding which units you are willing to sacrifice on a physical battlefield to survive a campaign.

Balatro is the option if you want a more abstract, combo-heavy card game. It takes poker hands and turns them into a scoring puzzle inside a roguelike structure, with jokers that rewrite the rules and allow huge, satisfying chains of points. Compared with Black Jacket, Balatro has no direct opponents in front of you and no narrative about escaping hell; it is more about chasing bigger and bigger scores through clever deckbuilding, while Black Jacket keeps things grounded in blackjack hands against specific souls and stresses reading the other side of the table.

Pairs & Perils sits in a different corner of the genre, blending memory and dungeon crawling. You match hero cards with their weapons on a grid to attack enemies, avoid traps that deal damage and skip your turn, and pick relics and consumables between fights. Compared with Black Jacket, Pairs & Perils feels more like a pattern-matching puzzle with roguelike elements, while Black Jacket stays closer to a single-card game pushed into new territory by rule-changing cards, curses, and a story about gambling your way out of the afterlife.
