Roost Social introduces a new way to communicate with friends without the pressure of instant messaging. Instead of delivering the text right away, the app considers how far away the recipient is. The time it takes for the message to arrive also depends on the courier you select. A virtual pigeon can deliver your text to a friend across town in minutes, while a slower animal or longer distance can add up to days.
Roost Social offers a creative way to chat. Because your messages take longer to deliver, every response feels a lot more rewarding and exciting. There is no expectation to receive a response immediately, so you can relax and forget about your message for a while. If ever in a rush, you can train your pigeons to fly faster through mini-games. The app also has a pen pal program that matches you with people of the same age and invites you to exchange letters.
Why Should I Download Roost Social?
You should download Roost Social if you’re looking for ways to make your social media experience more mindful. Our fast-paced, globalized world has adapted to impatience and the desire for instant gratification. Taking a step back and thinking about your messages instead of chasing dopamine in the form of quick responses can be calming.
Roost Social is not a social media app as we know them—with never-ending feeds filled with people we don’t know personally. You can only connect with your friends. The messages you send or receive don’t arrive instantly. You get to select a virtual animal to deliver your text in the time it would take the real animal to do so. It may only take minutes if you’re texting with a friend from across the street, but it will never be instantaneous. If you get impatient, you can look at the map and see how much progress your courier has made.
Grow and train your team of post birds to help them fly faster. You can do so through mini-games in the app. The purpose of the app is to remove the stress of everyday instant messaging and encourage its users to really think about what they write.

Bottled puts a different spin on the concept of slow messaging. Through this app, users are invited to send messages in virtual bottles. Unlike Roost Social, the sole purpose of Bottled is to connect with random people all over the world. Once your bottle is released into the sea, it will drift to a random shore and find its recipient, who can then decide to keep your message and respond to it, or throw it back into the sea to find another recipient. The app has a large user base with over 5 million people in 190 different countries. The concept of Bottled is pen pals reimagined.
WeWorld is a social application that connects people from different countries. The execution is similar to a dating app, where you see user profiles and swipe right or left. Once a match is made, you can message the other person and even plan to meet. The point is to connect with people from other countries, such as Brazil, Mexico, and Thailand.
Slowly combines matchmaking with pen pals. You fill out a profile, where you share your interests, hobbies, and languages, and the app matches you to people you have something in common with. There are no photos, so you can never make a judgment based on someone’s looks, making it quite accurate to old-timey letter exchanges. Your letters can take between 30 minutes and 60 hours to arrive, depending on where your pen pal is located. To make it even more authentic, you can collect virtual stamps.
