The Japanese weather satellite Himawari-8 became operational this week. Every 10 seconds, it takes a photo of the entire planet from a geostationary orbit some 22,000-miles above New Guinea. Today, The NYT combined the 144 images captured on the satellite’s first day into an animation that demands your attention.
