Every Dumb Outlet Becomes a Smart One, Amazon Slashes Its Smart Plug by 50% for Prime Day

Amazon is selling its own Smart Plug at nearly zero margin during Prime Day.

Amazon is selling its own hardware at nearly zero margin during Prime Day, and the smart plug is the clearest example of that this year. It’s down to $12 instead of $24, which is an all-time low for this Alexa-compatible smart plug that turns any standard electrical outlet into a voice-controlled or app-scheduled smart outlet in minutes. Access requires Prime membership, and the 30-day trial gets you there without a credit card.

Any outlet, any device, no smart home hub required

The Amazon smart plug works with any device that has a physical on/off switch: lamps, fans, coffee makers, space heaters, air purifiers, string lights, and anything else that runs on a standard outlet. Plug the smart plug into the wall, plug your device into the Smart Plug, open the Alexa app, and the setup is done in minutes without a hub, a bridge, or any additional hardware. From that point, voice commands via any Alexa-enabled device turn the connected device on or off from anywhere in the room or anywhere in the world via the app.

Scheduling turns any connected device into an automated one. Set a coffee maker to start before your alarm, program lights to turn on at sunset and off at a set time, or create away-from-home schedules that make the house look occupied while you travel. Routines combine the Smart Plug with other Alexa devices so that a single command or trigger can turn on multiple devices simultaneously: saying “Alexa, good morning” can start the coffee, turn on a lamp, and switch on a fan as a single action without touching anything.

The compact design keeps the second outlet on a duplex socket free rather than blocking it, which is a practical detail that cheaper smart plugs frequently get wrong by extending too far to one side. The plug automatically reconnects to Alexa after power or Wi-Fi outages without requiring a manual reset, and the Alexa+ home integration lets you describe what you want in plain language rather than building routines manually through a settings menu.

Amazon selling its own product at nearly zero profit

The Amazon plug launched at $24.99 and has rarely moved meaningfully below that. At $12, this is an all-time low and a price point that leaves almost nothing on the table for Amazon. The strategic logic is straightforward: every Smart Plug in a home deepens Alexa integration, which increases the value of the broader Echo ecosystem. Amazon is willing to take a near-zero margin on the hardware to get there, which means Prime Day is the best possible time to buy into the smart home setup you’ve been putting off.

A 2-pack is also available at $23 during this Prime Day window, which brings the per-unit cost down further and covers two outlets for the price of one Smart Plug at its normal retail price. For anyone setting up a first smart home or adding outlets to an existing setup, the math on the 2-pack is hard to ignore at these prices.

At $12, the Amazon plug costs less than most extension cords and turns any outlet in your home into part of a voice-controlled, app-scheduled smart home system. Amazon doesn’t price its own hardware this low on a regular schedule, and this Prime Day window is the only reason it’s possible right now.
