Millions of year ago, early man used to stare at the star-flecked sky and wonder, “When the hell will we be able to send a squid up there?” The time is now.

According to New Scientist, the (adorable) bobtail squid will be riding on the final launch of the space shuttle Endeavour next week. Scientists want to study the effect of microgravity on the bacteria that help the squid glow. (That’s correct: Not only is the squid cute, it glows!)

This could have profound impacts here on earth, because… cancer? Aw, hell, who knows. It’s just a cute little squid floating around up in space. Tax dollars well spent!
