TEPCO says they’re going to permanently shut down the four nuclear reactors at the Fukushima power plant which caused catastrophic problems for the entire Japanese nation after the earthquake that hit on March 11.
While members of Japan’s government are lobbying to have all six reactors decommissioned, Kyodo News reports that TEPCO Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata has only discussed closing the four which are encountering issues:
”We probably have no choice but to scrap reactors 1 to 4 if we look at their conditions objectively,” Katsumata added, expressing for the first time the company’s intention of scrapping the accident-stricken reactor units at a time when workers are continuing efforts to cool them down.
He also added that the company is going to have some serious financial problems trying to navigate the PR mess that faces the company after taking every misstep they could possibly take, but will work to try and avoid going bankrupt and being nationalized.
As for reactors 5 and 6, they’re currently in “cold shutdown” mode. [Kyodo News]
