In 2008 someone broke into Rob Norman's house. He had speculated about this situation since he was a kid and thought of different heroic ways of repealing an attack. When it actually happened, he realized that he wasn't Bruce Willis in Die Hard.

He was weak and instantly submissive—like most of us would be if we had a gun on our faces.

Not attacking 2 armed men that are breaking into his apartment does not make this guy a coward. If they attacked his girlfriend/child and he saved himself instead of helping them...something like that would be cowardly...but simply hiding from someone who may want to kill you...that's just smart. Society needs to be better about not letting that macho alpha male stereotype dictate how we view people in these situations. We wouldn't call a women a coward for acting the way he acted, so why treat him any differently?
