As promised, HTC has updated its once-flagship Desire phone with the Gingerbread version of Android its users almost rioted over. Only problem is, they recommend that only expert users update, and that certain “features” (such as texting) may be lost.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but texting is the second-most important function to a mobile phone, no? Perhaps it’s even more important than the ability to ring, because let’s face it—who does that anymore?
HTC wrote on its UK Facebook page that “in addition certain functions may no longer be usable after re-flashing the ROM, including but not limited to MMS and SMS and HTC also disclaims liability for any unusable functions.”
While they’re obviously playing it safe, it’s probably only worth the upgrade if you know what you’re doing. Ie, if you know how to connect your phone to a computer to download it that way. Make sure you back-up any texts, photos and other important bits of media before doing so, just to be sure. [HTC’s Facebook page via TechRadar]
