On the surface, NY State assemblyman Felix Ortiz's push to ban iPhone videocalling from roads makes sense. It would be horribly unsafe! But then you realize that it would be impossible, and you shake your head.

Yes, about 3 minutes of fact checking on Mr. Ortiz's part would have provided him with the info that iPhone 4 FaceTime videocalling is a Wi-Fi only feature, making videocalling while driving pretty much impossible. Unless you've got a Wi-Fi hotspot in your car, you won't be videocalling anyone.

But hey, I'm glad you're doing such important work, Ortiz. You clearly deserve to be in a place of power in our government. Keep it up. [NY Mag]

I don't have a problem with this. You know how the law always lags behind technology? This is a case where it will still be lagging behind, but just not by quite as much. Video calling won't be limited to wifi forever. And he didn't target the iphone, you know it'll be on other phones soon, on networks that aren't as shaky as ATT, so those will work anywhere.

Don't be so dismissive next time.
