In the future we may no longer need knives in the kitchen, at least not food prep knives. That is the idea behind the “Innnovative Laser Device for Cutting of Foodstuff”—entered by a Russian design student into this year’s James Dyson Award competition for problem-solving inventions.

The ball-like device, which is still in its early design phase as a prototype, uses a number of rotating rings lined with electromagnets coordinated by an internal microprocessor to slice, dice, chop, cube and carve geometrically perfect veggies and snacks. Users need only enter the type of food and desired size and shape of cut on a counter-top control panel.
