Intel s future posterboy-processor has apparently taken a few too many whippings from Dad and is being reduced to just another mewling, underpowered CPU. The Montvale is an Itanium chip being produced by Intel. Intel was pushing this chip to the absolute furthest for top of the line server performance, but the chip isn t living up to Intel’s lofty standards so Intel was forced to nerf it even more.
In early June Intel announced that they would be reducing the process width of the Montvale by 25nm to accommodate for its lack lusterperformance. Apparently that wasn t enough so Intel announced yesterday that they would also be knocking of 900 MHz of processing speed on the chip. They also decided to codename it the “Dirty, Dirty Baby.” Bummer for the Montvale. Maybe we can still look forward to the Intel Tukwila in the distant future.
