Announced at Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event as “one more thing,” the first wholly new iPhone form factor, with a foldable design, is officially called the iPhone Duo.
As expected, the iPhone Duo has a shorter and wider design, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8. Apple being Apple, of course, the corners are rounded. It’s also Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever made when unfolded, which is slimmer than even the iPhone Air, which is only 5.6mm thick. Its thinnest doesn’t mean the structural integrity is compromised.
The outside screen measures 5.4 inches, and the inner folding screen is 7.6 inches. Apple is pitching the iPhone Duo as the ultimate device for consuming content—watching videos, playing games, and reading. It’s also the first iPhone that lets you have multiple apps open at once. With its large 7.6-inch screen, everything will look even larger than on the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s 6.9-inch display.
Most importantly, iOS 27 has been optimized for the iPhone Duo’s larger inner screen. The dock has moved to the right side, for example.
For creation, the iPhone Duo has two rear cameras. There’s also a camera on the upper right on the outer screen and a FaceTime camera under the inner screen.
The iPhone Duo also supports an Apple Pencil for drawing and notetaking, but that’s not coming until later.
Like the iPhone 18 Pros, the iPhone Duo is powered by an A20 chip. It has the same 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and dual 16-core Neural Engine.
Apple says the iPhone Duo will last up to 31 hours for video playback on the inner screen and up to 44 hours on the outer screen. Compare that to up to 45 hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Color choices aren’t much to write home about: you get a Night Sky or a Star White. Cosmic Orange would have stood out more and could probably convince consumers to buy it just to show off. But alas, dark and light is all we get.
The iPhone Duo isn’t available quite as soon as the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max; you’ll have to wait until October 16 to pre-order one, with official sales starting on October 23. The 256GB model will start at a whopping $1,999.
