In case you were still wondering whether this Avengers thing would catch on with the kids... The big Marvel team-up movie amassed over $200 million in its opening weekend, for a bigger debut than the last Harry Potter movie, The Dark Knight... or any other movie, ever. (In non-inflation-adjusted terms.)

Part of the reason for the huge box office? Over half of movie-goers chose to see The Avengers in 3-D — and to be fair, the 3-D conversion was actually pretty decent, especially compared to most other post-conversions thus far.

Avengers now has a global box office total of $641 million, according to Box Office Mojo, and is easily on track to join the select club of movies raking in over $1 billion at the global box office. [L.A. Times]
