Master of horror John Carpenter is, of course, also a master musician, having created the iconic, influential scores for classics like Halloween, They Live, and Assault on Precinct 13. His new album, Lost Themes II, is out April 15 (NPR is currently streaming the whole thing). He just dropped a woozy video to promote his new opus.
According to label Sacred Bones Records, Lost Themes II aims for a more robust sound than its predecessor, 2014's Lost Themes, the director’s first non-soundtrack album. The video for “Distant Dream,” the first track on the album, shows Carpenter and his band (among them: his son, Cody, on synth, and his godson Daniel Davies on guitar) rocking out in the studio.
It’s a fairly straightforward performance video (directed by Carpenter—who else?), but there’s one notable moment that can’t be a coincidence. When Carpenter begins his keyboard riff, well, let’s just say They Live fans will get the joke.
Carpenter and company are heading out on tour this spring and summer; it’ll be his first-ever live musical shows. Here’s a full list of dates. Bring your sunglasses!
