We all know Joss Whedon loves strong female characters — but The Avengers will only feature one female Avenger, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. How will Whedon manage to work more female characters in? He explains.

In an interview with the Australian paper The Sunday Herald-Sun Whedon admitted that while Scarjo is the only female Avenger. She’s not going to be the only female character.

“It is true that the movie is only going to have one female avenger”, Whedon said of Johansson’s part. “But she will not be the only female character”.

Some possible other female characters could include some supporting S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (such as Maria Hill). Or possibly an evil female with superpowers, like Scarlet Witch. But we’re banking on the return of Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts. But one way or another, Whedon will find some way to proclaim his love for strong butt-kicking women somehow.

And as for the storyline, Whedon would only reveal this tiny tidbit:

It will be a new story that has many things from different arcs of the comics in it. There is no one Avengers story that you can just do the way that you can do the origin of Spider-Man. You really have to cull from the original and The Ultimates, which is one of The Avengers titles.”

So to everybody who’d been hoping for the Wasp, no luck this time around. But there’s always the sequel!
