Kyocera is jumping on the low-end QWERTY bandwagon with the M1000 announced today at CTIA. This candybar style phone opens to unveil another screen and a QWERTY keyboard similar to that of the LG VX-9800.

Texting freaks should love this phone, but for anyone else it may be worth a pass. It is a pretty average or even low-end phone. It does support EV-DO, which is a plus, especially for lightening-fast IMing or text messaging. I'll see if I can con our intrepid reporters on-site at CTIA to go give the M1000 a little grope. Until then, jump for a picture of the device closed.

Nice.. looks like a more rountangled version of the Switchback. Unfortunately, the screens on the Switchback are smallll. This does fix the goofy loop antenna and the weird numerical pad. The inner keyboard looks to be a bit better of a design, too, with the 4x5 grid over the 3-6-6-5 of the Switchback.

Lower-end yes, but I appreciate the steamlining/updating of my phone. Though now, I envy.
