If there was any doubt that video games that allow kids to bring their physical toys into the actual game were more than just a fad, Lego and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment are joining the likes of Nintendo's amiibo, Disney's Infinity, and Spin Master's Sick Bricks with its new Lego Dimensions game for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Wii U.

The game appears to loosely follow the storyline from last year's The Lego Movie, with gamers playing through various Lego universes including DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, The Wizard of Oz, and even Back to the Future. Initially players will start with just three included characters—Batman (plus Batmobile), Wyldstyle, and Gandalf—but additional characters, and vehicles, can be unlocked by purchasing, building, and importing expansion packs into the game using the included Lego Toy Pad.

Developed by TT Games, Lego Dimensions will be launching on September 27 later this year along with a small assortment of expansion packs that will include Back to the Future's Marty McFly and additional characters from The Lego Movie including Emmet and Benny. But over time Lego can continue to expand the game's replay value with characters from its growing catalog of properties. [Lego Dimensions]
