The leapfrogging has begun with Blu-ray burners, with LG hopping to the next level with its Super Multi Blue (GBW-H10N), a 4x Blu-ray internal PC writer that can lay down data at 18Mbps. Why should we care? The LG Super Multi Blue's fastest competition can only write Blu-ray discs at half that speed, 2x. But with the slower-writing Blu-ray rewriteable discs, alas, LG's burner is still stuck at 2x.
We're getting a strange sense of deja vu right about now, where in the coming years these companies will continue their speed battles, moving write speed numbers up to 8x, 16x, ad nauseum, just as they did with DVDs and CDs before that. Maybe one day we'll all realize it's faster and easier to just write data to hard disks, or ultimately, cheap flash drives. Anyway, LG hasn't announced availability or pricing.
