In sixth grade, a classmate showed us his brand new “unbreakable” glasses. After three introductions into the concrete wall at high rates of speed by my skeptical friend, there lay a slightly scratched lens and disjointed frames, the object of such pride just minutes before. My point is simple: Call something “drop-proof” or “spill-proof” or “bulletproof” and you’re just asking to be disproved (nerd). Nevertheless, Logitec (not Logitech, remember) has introduced their new “Shock Proof Body HD” series of FireWire/USB 2.0 external drives. Able to withstand a “fall” from 70cm (all of 2.2 feet) up to 100 times, they run the gamut from 40GB to 100GB ($150-$520, approx.) The devices don’t make use of the drive head locking technology employed by other vendors, but instead have a shock absorption system that allows the drive to “float” inside the enclosure, transferring little shock to the drive. Japan-only for right now, but that’s Logitec for you.
