Mark Romanek is joining the ranks of movie-makers turned TV directors. Rumor has it Romanek will be joining the list of impressive names working on Locke & Key including Sarah Connor Chronicles’ Josh Friedman, Steven Spielberg, and Kurtzman and Orci.
Deadline is reporting that Romanek is in talks to direct the pilot episode of the adaptation of the comic, written by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son) and drawn by Gabriel Rodriguez. The series focuses on three kids who end up keeping watch over a spooky old mansion that is a giant maze full of hidden portals and adventures. But, it’s so much more than that, and attaching someone like Romanek to the series should speak volumes.
Best known for making America cry with his Johnny Cash music video “Hurt,” and later again with the film Never Let Me Go, Romanek seems pretty well suited to bring this strangely dark comic to life. There is murder, death, memory wiping, body snatching and devious plotting happening around every corner of this old house. Romanek can easily bring that dark and horrendous edge to material that could be blown off as childish.
