"Affordable" for futuretastic electrostatic speakers means a few grand. Martin Logan's ElectroMotion ESL electrostratic speakers'll be under $2000 when they're out in March, using the cheapest full-size electrostatic transducer ever. They sounded superclean during a five-minute demo. [Martin Logan]
I've owned a bunch of MLs over the years. They are what I'd call "polite" speakers. They are stunning for things like classical, jazz, female vocals. They are incredibly fast—just listen for the lack of sibilance when you hear breathy "s" sounds in lyrics. But I got rid of mine and have never looked back.
MLs just don't rock like dynamic speakers when you drop the needle on the Stones or Iggy. There's something visceral that is missing.
