After a re-release earlier this summer, Francis Ford Coppola’s 2024 passion project Megalopolis is once again back on the big screen.
Per Deadline, a second re-release will take place on Saturday, October 24 at cinemas owned by Reading International Inc. across the United States. Afterwards, attendees will be treated to a livestreamed Q&A with Coppola and his son Roman, the film’s second unit director. (There’ll also be physical hard copy letters for audience members written by Coppola the elder.) If you’ve got a question, you can text it before, during, or after the movie, and he’ll will answer the best ones.
And yes, as the outlet notes, the film’s brief “live audience” segment at select screenings will return again here.
Megalopolis was in development hell for a long time before Coppola funded the whole thing himself to get it made. Inspired by Roman history, it stars Adam Driver as Cesar Catilina, an architect with visions of building the titular utopia within the city of New Rome. He faces opposition from the city’s mayor, Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), which becomes more complicated when he and Cicero’s daughter, Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel), fall in love. Oh, and Cesar can stop time.
At the time, critics were divided on the film, and audiences largely didn’t see it. Coppola’s gotten the last laugh, though, as the movie will be “periodically” in theaters, including New Year’s Day. Maybe, like Digger, more people will become pilled to this movie over time and see Coppola’s vision for it.
