Game of Thrones veteran Michelle MacLaren was supposed to make her big-screen debut with the Wonder Woman solo film — but now she’s left the project over “creative differences,” the studio tells The Hollywood Reporter.
This makes MacLaren the second female director to leave a superhero film, after Patty Jenkins (Monster) walked off Thor: The Dark World. (Jenkins was replaced by another Game of Thrones director, Alan Taylor.) It’s not clear what the “creative differences,” as the studio calls them, involved. But it was probably going to be a tricky job to take the version of Wonder Woman introduced in Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman and turn her into someone who could support a standalone film. The Wonder Woman movie is slotted for 2017.
But MacLaren may still get to direct a superhero movie — The Wrap is reporting that she’s “rumored” to be directing Marvel’s long-awaited Captain Marvel movie, now that her schedule has cleared up. And that movie will be written by two female scribes: Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out). So maybe Warner Bros.’ loss is Marvel’s gain. Here’s hoping, anyway.
