Microsoft Somehow Becomes Authority On the Best Wi-Fi Cities

We don’t know how it happened, but now Microsoft is claiming to be an authority on city WiFi infrastructure. Hey, who are we to judge? Newspapers and magazines release similar lists all the time, so we suppose a multinational corporation could do the same. Just don’t start telling us what toothpaste to buy.

Among Gates’ top five are Seattle, San Francisco, Austin, Portland, and Hotlanta. Each city gets a lengthy explanation for why they’ve been given this glorious recognition: San Francisco’s city-sponsored TechConnect initiative, for example, is looking to allow “universal, affordable, wireless broadband access” for every single ones of its 744,230 inhabitants. Even the hippies on Haight Street will get some lovin’.
