Though Netflix has made a name for itself as the home of some of the better live-action adaptations of big name, mainstream comics, its upcoming series Raising Dion is based on an indie comic about the sort of superhero origin story we seldom see.
Based on Dennis Liu’s comic book about a single, black mother raising her young, metahuman son, Netflix’s upcoming series will focus on the woman’s day to day life trying to teach her son how to control his abilities while also evading the governmental agency that’s hunting them.
In a public statement about the series, Liu explained how he first decided to create a comic specifically about a black woman and her son out of a desire to see a broader variety of diverse and inclusive stories in comics. Said Liu:
“More than ever, we need more stories told from different points of view and my hope with Raising Dion is to create a cinematic experience for all families that will lift your spirits and make you laugh and cry.”
Raising Dion is being produced by MACRO with American Gods showrunner Michael Green attached to write and produce. Michael B. Jordan has also been cast in an unnamed supporting role.
