No PC and No Console Required, Meta’s Quest 3S VR Headset Is Being Dumped on Amazon

Meta's wireless VR headset comes with Gorilla Tag extras.

Ask a twelve-year-old what they want this year and there is a fair chance the answer involves Gorilla Tag, the game that turned a virtual reality headset into a playground item. Meta sells an edition of its entry-level headset built around it, and that version is below its usual price for a short time, as the Meta Quest 3S 128GB with the Gorilla Tag bundle is $297 on Amazon, down from $349. Any customer can order at that price, with or without Prime.

No Cable, No Console, No PC Required

The Quest 3S is a standalone headset: the processor, the storage and the battery are all inside, and nothing connects it to another machine. That is what makes it suitable for a family, since it can be handed to a child in the living room without a gaming PC humming next to it. Meta uses the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, which it credits with twice the graphics power of the Quest 2, along with 8GB of memory, a third more than before. In practice, games load faster and look sharper than on the previous generation.

Two color cameras on the front show the room around you in full color while you wear the headset. Meta calls this passthrough, and it does more than prevent collisions with the coffee table. Games and apps can place virtual objects in your actual space, a board game on the carpet or a target on the wall. I find it the most convincing argument for the current generation, because it removes the unease of being cut off from the house while someone else is cooking next door.

What distinguishes this edition is its bundle, which Amazon presents as exclusive. It contains items for Gorilla Tag, namely the Gorilla Space Program suit and helmet, together with 2,000 Shiny Rocks, the game’s currency. To be clear, these are cosmetic extras and credits for a specific game. For a child who already plays, they are the whole point, and for an adult curious about VR, they will mean little. The purchase also comes with a three-month trial of Meta’s subscription catalog of more than 100 games, subject to eligibility and auto-renewal terms, and Amazon adds one month of Xbox Game Pass for new users.

Some limits should be stated plainly. Battery life is given as two hours or more, enough for one good session before the headset goes back on its charger. Storage is 128GB, which is fine to start with and will feel tighter as larger games accumulate. Other editions are listed on the same page, including a 128GB model with $25 of store credit and a 256GB model with Batman: Arkham Shadow, so I’d choose according to who will wear it most.

For the Gorilla Tag edition in 128GB, the Meta Quest 3S costs $297 on Amazon against a list price of $349, with no Prime condition and free returns. Amazon’s page showed a countdown with about 23 hours remaining when this was written.
