Guillermo del Toro dropped some monster-sized bombs about Pacific Rim 2 and Pacific Rim 3—specifically alluding to the fact that Pac Rim 2 and Pac Rim 3 would be connected by some of our favorite characters.
In an interview with Collider, Del Toro revealed that the team is currently hard at work on the script to Pac Rim 2 (the third film has yet to be greenlit) and that he has big plans for the ending of Pac Rim 2:
"Some of your favorite characters come back, some others don't because we have decided that we're going to shoot ambitiously and say 'Let's hope we have three movies,' So some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one."
This sounds like both a fun and dangerous idea. Going into a sequel gunning for another could mean a big, fat cliff hanger, and that's kind of eeeeeeh. However, as long as there are giant robots fighting giant monsters, then we'll probably live. Plus GDT has hinted in past interviews that we will be exploring more of the "world of drift," which has a lot of potential for some really weird brain-wave-riding experiments. Just bring back Charlie Day, please!
