Sometimes people accuse me of being biased towards Apple and giving them too much column space. And I have to admit, I’m a pretty big fan of (some) of their products. But the real reason Apple gets lots of smooth, slow stroking from me is that, love them or hate them, justified or not, when they do something, lots of people follow them. Case in point: these ‘Rainbow Stix’ MP3 players from Ministry of Sound, which are just regular 128MB USB flash players (I think I’ve even seen them before, although the brand name escapes me) that just happen to be colored the exact same colors as the iPod mini.
Do you realize what that means? It means that a company selling a competing product is hoping that people who already bought the competitor might also purchase their product, just because it matches. I mean, the iPod mini colors are okay, but it’s not like they picked The Five Best Pastels Ever. This is why the iPod is interesting; it’s fascinating to watch how everyone reacts to it.
