Says Witherspoon:

The movies that are being made feel different. There are a lot of really, really, really big movies about robots and things — and there's not a part for a 34-year-old woman in a robot movie. I've never done the giant robot movie. Never done the superhero movie. That doesn't interest me too much.

I'm happy to see other people have posted the "Wait, that's actually not what she said" comment. And happy people are pointing out that Aliens was over 20 years ago. She's not talking about SF/F in general. She's talking about SF/F movies in Hollywood. It is an issue.

Because there's a lot to be said for the lack of female roles in current SF/F movies. Very, very rarely do we get a strong SF/F movie with a female protagonist, or a strong female supporting role where she's not "The Girlfriend." When people are pointing out a movie that's over 20 years old, or saying she voiced a character in an animated movie, there's a problem. And it's a problem that I wish io9 would address, instead of just mocking the person who made the comment because she played a ditz almost 10 years ago.
