After Deadpool & Wolverine grossed almost $1.5 billion, it was clear Deadpool was returning to the big screen no matter what. Producer and star Ryan Reynolds could tease it, talk around it, and call the character a supporting player, but it was happening. And while we still don’t know when and where he’s officially making his return, a new quote makes things that much more definitive.

“There’s stuff upcoming,” Reynolds said this week at Fanatics Fest in New York. “There’s eventually, you know, remotely another Deadpool film. It’s going to be great.”

According to Deadline, “the film is currently in early development with no writer or director attached at this time.” However, the quote actually went further too, hinting that whatever the film ends up being, it’ll explore aspects of the character we haven’t seen in the films yet. “There’s a few really deep cuts that I think are missing behind the movies,” Reynolds said. “I think there’s a few deep cuts missing from some of the comics. There’s certainly some stuff that, you know, I love that Fabian Nicieza wrote that is incredible. Gerry Duggan, another friend and incredible comic writer [wrote stuff too].” You can watch this clip at this link.

Of course, the prevailing rumor is that Deadpool (and potentially Wolverine too) will return if not in this year’s Avengers: Doomsday, then in 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Those films will work to launch the latest big storyline for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Mutant Saga, in which Deadpool is likely to be a major player.

Now, will we get confirmation of this film at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend? We don’t know. But Reynolds is generally very, very tight-lipped about this kind of thing, so for him to let this slip, it’s not a bad bet to think something is coming. Maybe that’s in Doomsday footage, maybe it’s in a future schedule reveal, we don’t know. But it certainly seems like Deadpool is, in fact, returning in his own MCU movie.

io9 has reached out to Marvel Studios for confirmation or clarification and will update this post if we hear back.
