The T9 Portable SSD from Samsung is an ultra-portable external hard drive designed to enable rapid transfer of large files. It can achieve sequential read/write rates of up to 2000 MB/s via a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface. This new model is nearly twice as fast as Samsung’s previous T7 model. This model comes with 1TB of storage, which can hold large amounts of video content, photos, or even parts of a game library, all while keeping them separate from your primary computer.
An extra hard drive for you to keep all of your excess files and documents
The read and write speeds of this device can reach up to 2000 MB/s via the USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 connection. At these speeds, a 2GB file should transfer in approximately 1 second. So, you won’t have to wait long when using your computer to edit 4K video from the drive or to back up a large project. However, if your computer or cable does not support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, you are limited to the slower Gen 2.
The 1TB version is one of three sizes, with 2TB and 4TB options also available, so there’s room to scale up if you need more later. For video and photo work, 1TB holds a serious amount of 4K footage, RAW photos, or project files without filling your computer’s internal storage. The T9 also records directly from a phone, capturing iPhone ProRes 4K at 60 fps over the included cable. For games, you can park an overflow library on it instead of deleting titles.
Durability comes from a build rated to survive drops from up to 3 meters, handy for a drive that gets carried around. A thermal control system keeps the surface below 140°F under load, so the T9 maintains its speed during long transfers rather than throttling as it heats up. It’s compact and light at roughly 4 ounces, with a soft-touch, ridged finish that resists fingerprints.
The Samsung Magician software handles maintenance, including firmware updates, drive-health monitoring, and security tools. For protection, the T9 supports AES 256-bit hardware encryption, so you can lock the drive with a password and keep its contents private if it’s lost or stolen. Samsung backs it with a 5-year limited warranty, which is on the longer end for a portable SSD.
The T9 is a fast, well-built portable SSD for anyone who regularly moves large files or works off an external drive. At $250, down from $288, this is a nice chunk of savings if you need a fast and ultraportable SSD.
