Coinciding with festivities at San Diego Comic-Con, io9 can exclusively reveal that writer Bryan Lee O’Malley is back with a brand-new Scott Pilgrim one-shot comic from Oni Press. It’s O’Malley’s first Scott Pilgrim comic since the series’ conclusion in 2010 (not counting the series’ pretty color versions). It’s called Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott, and it comes out this November.
Keeping the graphic novel’s penchant for video game homages alive, Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott acts as a prequel to the beat-’em-up video game of the same name. The 24-page comic will feature a 16-page introduction of Scott Pilgrim battling against his doppelganger. No, not Nega-Scott. Metal Scott. Methinks Metal Scott might know everything Scott’s going to do, but that’s not gonna help him because Scott’ll know everything Metal Scott’s going to do. Strange, isn’t it?
Anywho, have a gander at an early preview of what lies in store as the pair have a bout of fisticuffs before the comic—which will feature “never-before-seen extras”—hits your local comic book store this fall.
Here’s the series’ synopsis, which delightfully takes the piss out of itself:
Scott met Ramona. Sparks flew. The two of them had to work together in order to defeat Ramona’s Seven Evil Exes and their nefarious leader, Gideon Gordon Graves. Some other stuff happened in various media formats that may or may not be canon. That’s all in the past. These days, Scott and Ramona are a happy couple, and the Exes have moved on from their unhealthy obsessions. I guess they all got therapy or whatever. Now, after a period of peace, a new threat is about to emerge. Are our heroes ready? Let’s find out!!!
As the above description hinted at, it’s a pretty tricky situation guessing what does and doesn’t count as canon in the ol’ book of Scott, given Edgar Wright’s live-action movie pulling an Akira with its own ending before the graphic novel ended, those Adult Swim Scott Pilgrim vs. the Animation shorts that remembered Lisa Miller exists, and Science SARU’s Netflix anime pulling a Rebuild of Evangelion rope-a-dope on fans assuming it’d strictly be following the comics only to act as a stealth remake.
While Scott Pilgrim Takes Off season two was never in the cards, Scott Pilgrim EX acting as a sort of sequel to the anime by proxy makes O’Malley’s new comic a quasi-follow-up for folks whose eyes aren’t crossed parsing any of the above.
To sort things out and answer why O’Malley returned to a series he’s bookended two-fold, here’s a word from the man himself.
“When I was asked to create a minicomic for Scott Pilgrim EX, I quickly said yes without considering the implications,” Bryan Lee O’Malley said in a press release. “Only when I started writing and drawing it did I realize this would be the first new Scott Pilgrim comic in 16 years. It’s only a trifle, but returning to Scott’s Toronto really did feel like coming home.”
So he did it for funsies. Honestly, we won’t hold him; that’s as good a reason as any to create.
Fans can look forward to Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott when it hits the shelves of your local brick-and-mortar comic book shop on November 15.
