Andrew Garfield’s superhero stint ended with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is a whole lot of movie. Already stuffed with plot and villains, Shailene Woodley’s Mary Jane Watson was cut from the film, and it’s something that’s still on her mind.
In a recent episode of SAG-AFTRA’s Conversations, Woodley recalled how becoming Mary Jane wasn’t an audition, just a talk with director Marc Webb. It was a “rattling” experience for her, particularly since she’d been auditoning for her roles up to that point. “When you audition and get chosen, when you’re on set, there’s zero doubt you’re the right person for that role. When you just get an offer or do a general meeting, it’s more murky,” she said. “I was like, ‘How do I know that I’m who you want, and not just who the studio wants?”
Despite worries, she was a Spider-Man fan and loved Mary Jane growing up, and playing her was a “dream. When I got it, I was like, ‘This is so exciting!'” She only filmed a few scenes with Garfield, but she was expected to have a larger role in a third Amazing movie. A year later, she got a “fun phone call” from Sony, who told her the MJ scenes were being snipped so she could get a clean intro in the third movie. It’s something Woodley understood, even if she goodnaturedly joked the studio actually regretted casting her.
We all know what happened next: no Amazing Spider-Man 3, and Tom Holland’s currently swinging it up as Spidey with his wife Zendaya playing his MJ. Sony, meanwhile, doesn’t seem keen to try and get Garfield back in the suit like they might’ve after he entered Spider-Man: No Way Home to intended applause. It’s something he’s still apparently open to, though, so maybe one day we’ll see how that pairing would’ve fared in the maligned, short-lived universe.
