Shapeshifting Furniture for Your Alternate Dimension Vacation Home

If you’ve ever wished for furniture that does more than meets the eye, this shapeshifting table might fit the bill nicely.

The project, which just debuted at Milan Design Week, is the work of a team at the MIT Media Lab led by Professor Hiroshi Ishii. Using over a thousand individual pins, the surface of the table can shift and meld in response to outside motions it picks up on its sensors — whether that motion comes from the hand movements of someone standing above it or a ball rolling across the table’s surface.
