Should Sony buy Apple?

By

Reading time 1 minute

In the September issue of Wired, Josh McHugh gives Sony a piece of advice: buy Apple. Or at the very least cut some sort of distribution deal with them. While we love the fantasy baseball aspect of speculating on all these potential matchups – Disney and Apple, Apple and Universal, etc – we really hope Sony doesn’t take his advice. Casting aside the issue of whether or not Sony could successfully integrate Apple, McHugh himself concedes that the really tricky part would be convincing Steve Jobs to sell. But even on the off-chance that Jobs would sell his beloved Apple, we still wouldn’t want this to happen. We love Sony (admittedly in a dysfunctional, wish-they-we’re doing-better kind of way) and we love Apple (in a wish-we-could-afford-a-G5 kind of way), but we also really like the fact that they’re competitors and that each company is constantly trying to out do the other in terms of design and innovation (even though Apple has had the edge for a while now). We think Apple is doing fine just the way it is, and that the best thing Sony could do right now would be imitate it, not break it.
