If you’re looking for a fireplace but don’t have room for a chimney, here’s a hot-looking unit from German designer Peter Maly. Part of the Sieger Design Fireplace Collection, the Plaza Ventless Fireplace can be installed in a free-standing configuration or mounted on a wall, and burns a unique alcohol gel that radiates heat without all that pesky, life-draining carbon monoxide. We’ve used this alcohol gel stuff in a ventless fireplace similar to this, and although the flame isn t as bright as that of natural gas or good old wood logs, it’s still a pleasing effect, and gives off an aroma that reminds you of sterno burning under the steam table at a country club buffet. No pricing information is forthcoming, but if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it.
