If you have a Sony device that runs Google TV, congratulations: you're very much an early adopter. You might also now want to try rooting your system, in order to bypass the content locks that many sites have for Google TV.

Over at GTV Hacker, the process of rooting your Sony device—be it a Blu-ray player or HDTV—is explained in some detail. While it doens't require any hardware modifications, it is still an involved process: it requires four different USB flash drives and plenty of work at a command line.

But, as a result, you will be able to install a modified Flash plugin which will allow you to stream restricted content from the likes of Hulu, NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX. I'm sure there are plenty of people developing new software for the rooted version, too. [GTV Hacker via The Verge]

Arggh! there goes a...snake a snake!

I'd be interested to know how many people actually have Google TV at this point. It's one of those things with a lot of potential but which is dead in the water unless there's at least some cooperation by the cable industry.
