The art of what went wrong

Robert Overweg is an artist who captures unintended moments of artistic weirdness in videogames. In a series of images called “Glitches,” he shows us the strange beauty spawned by errors in Left 4 Dead and Half-Life.

There’s something poignant about this pictures, where men embrace while floating in the air and half-rendered houses look like something out of a surrealist painting. I think I like these glitched worlds as much as the canonical ones. As work like Overweg’s becomes more common, I wonder if we’ll start seeing easter egg glitches in videogames, where designers deliberately include strange landscapes and odd perspectives if you turn in just the right direction.
