Infinite Jest is one of the great novels of our era, but it would probably make a terrible movie. In any case, this is as close as we're ever likely to get: a music video for the Decemberists' "Calamity Song," that pays tribute to a scene from David Foster Wallace's great novel.
That scene is a game of Eschaton, the fictional apocalyptic tennis spinoff that Wallace invents in the book. This video was directed by Michael Schur, co-creator and showrunner of Parks and Recreation, who explains his fanaticism for Wallace's book in a must-read article. It turns out that Schur actually owns the film rights to Infinite Jest, although he's unlikely to make the movie because he's already busy.
According to the Times article, Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy finally read Infinite Jest a couple of summers ago, after "a few failed attempts," and thought of the Eschaton sequence as a perfect music video for "Calamity Song." The record label didn't quite get it, but Schur, who went to college with the brother of the band's manager, was desperate for the gig.
