The 2009 DC Animated Universe version of Wonder Woman’s origins is one of our favorite takes on how Diana transformed from Amazonian princess to heroic warrior. And now, to take advantage of all the excitement for the upcoming live-action film, Warner Bros. is making it available again.
Announced today, Wonder Woman: Commemorative Edition will bring the animated movie to Blu-ray with a set of new bonus features to tie into the character’s 75th anniversary celebrations this year, as well as a sneak preview of Bruce Timm’s upcoming Harley Quinn and Batman animated feature. Originally there were plans to re-instate the Wonder Woman footage that originally earned it an R rating upon release, but plans were scrapped (and revealed last week when a new ratings listing drove speculation about a potential rating for the live-action film), leaving the edited PG-13 cut of the movie intact for the release.
The 2009 story, penned by comics writer Gail Simone, updates Diana’s origin to integrate her into a modern world beyond Themiscyra. It’s inspired by stories from the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths reimagining of the character by George Perez, Len Wein and Greg Potter—and tasks her with defending the word from an invasion by Ares’ hellish armies. It’s one of the better outputs from the DC animated movie universe, so if you’re looking for more Wonder Woman in the run up to the new film, it’s worth checking out. The Wonder Woman: Commemorative Edition is set to release digitally May 2, with a Blu-ray/DVD release coming on May 16.
