Gizmodo is officially 10 years old! And, while we've been celebrating this all week, I thought it would be fun (and/or funny) to take a look back at the ancestor gadgets we would all be using if someone were to turn the dial back, way back, all the way back to 2002.
The Computer
The Apple iBook G3/600 14-Inch (Early 2002 - Tr): 600MHz PowerPC 750x processor, PC100 SDRAM, 256 MB of RAM, a tray-loading DVD-ROM/CD-RW "Combo" drive, 2 USB ports and 1 firewire port, 1024x768 native resolution, a 20GB hard drive (!?), 6hr battery life...blah blah blah, and it weighed 5.9lbs!
The Phone
The Nokia 6610 was a top selling mobile phone in 2002, with 15 million units sold that year. The phone weighed 84g. Its display was 128 x 128 pixels, 5 lines, 1.5 inches (~121 ppi pixel density) and four-way scroll. Vibration, and downloadable polyphonic and monophonic ringtones. Its phone book could hold up to 300 names, each with 3x phone numbers associated. Its memory could manage only the most reent 10 dialed, 10 received, and 10 missed calls; 75 text messages, 250 calendar notes, 6 Java apps (64 kB each), and 35 images. The 6610 had no camera—but it did have Xpress-on covers! LOL
The MP3 Player
The 2nd Gen iPod came out in July 2002, with only covered firewire port to its name. It was available in 10 and 20GB capacities and was the first iPod with Windows compatibility (through Musicmatch). Its wheel was touch sensitive, unlike that of its predecessor, which actually spun.
The Camera
The Nikon Coolpix 5700 had an 8x Zoom-Nikkor lens with 8.9-71.2mm coverage and 5.0 megapixels. Cute.
