Nostalgia is this weird, nagging sort of feeling. It can be mined for pleasure, sure, but sometimes it’s a nebulous notion of a thing with fuzz corners, floating around somewhere at in your chest like an itch you just can’t scratch. Something warm, but empty inside. The Kamikaze Heart’s “Beverly Hills” is just like that, except you know, a song.
“Beverly Hills” probably makes you think of past-its-prime Weezer, and if it does STOP, and get ready to re-calibrate. This track is off The Kamikaze Hearts’ 2006 record Oneida Road and while I can’t speak to the quality of that whole album having not heard it in its entirety, if it’s anything like “Beverly Hills” we should both go listen to it right now. With it’s vampy but entrancing finger-picked guitar instrumentation and eerie but wonderful far-away vocals, “Beverly Hills” encapsulates a sound I can only describe as “yearning.” It calls up bittersweet memories that don’t exist, or something like that.
I mean, I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’s a damn good song. I hope you enjoy it even half as much as I do. [Spotify, Amazon, iTunes]
