After yesterday’s news about Torchwood’s new writing team, we’ve now learned that Starz’s ten-episode Torchwood reboot will be titled Torchwood: The New World. Also, Russell T. Davies himself dropped some hints about the series’ plot. UPDATE 8/7/10: More details below.

Torchwood: The New World focuses on Rex and Ester, a CIA agent and analyst who require the help of Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper with a yet-to-be-explained alien conundrum. Davies also noted that this self-contained, ten-episode arc could take advantage of premium cable’s license for violence and licentiousness:

[Torchwood’s] like a legend now … it’s like something that’s ceased to exist and is now spoken of only in whispers […] The two teams coming together is a big part of the story — are they friends or enemies? […] I’ve always had loose standards and practices […] If the story demands intimacy or savagery, we will go there absolutely … there’s nothing better than a great big global thriller that stops for a sex scene — it’s probably hard to make that happen in a thriller.

Executive producer Julie Gardner also noted, “It’s absolutely rebooted to welcome in a new audience.” Take that as you will, TW faithful.

[THR. Thanks James!]

Update 8/7/10: Here are some more details from Zap2It’s TCA coverage about the show’s Summer 2011 launch:

– Rhys Williams (Kai Owen) will be back with their baby.

– Sorry Capt. John Hart fans, but James Marsters is not going to be in this 10-episode season, but he’s still in good with Davies for possible future participation.
