The Tongue Of The Dung Fly Speaks Volumes

In one of the portraits from our bizarre gallery of insect faces, you can see what happens when a fly sticks out its tongue. It’s a disturbingly human expression on an otherwise alien visage.

Science photographer Steve Gschmeissner used a scanning electron microscope to take these headshots of familiar insects. What’s revealed are all the armored, alien details of faces that we normally don’t see. Meeting the eyes of a wasp and seeing the soft fluff of fur around a honeybee’s face are at first disorienting, then fascinating. The images have been colorized to call attention to the different features of the bugs’ faces.
